Untangling the complexity and real business benefits
of e-procurement

Date: 04/07/2003
Author: Warwick
Metcalfe
Posted By: Marius
Agenbag
Description: “No
single product offers a panacea and any
e-procurement product is only as good as the process
and infrastructure supporting it,” declares Warwick
Metcalfe, secure business solutions architect at
Inobits Consulting. “Before a company considers
e-procurement products, it must take a thorough look
at its sourcing strategy and procurement processes
(45% of the problem), and the infrastructural
enablers (35% of the problem). Only then can it
consider what e-procurement software to purchase
(20% of the problem).” |

Identity Management at the centre of all concerns

Description:
Security, and in particular the issue of identity,
have been swiftly brought to the forefront of South
African business conscience for two reasons in
particular, i.e. - Compliance & Recent Exposures.
You need to understand the impact of these problems
if you are in the financial services, communication,
ISP or ASP industries. There has been a lot of talk
about ECT and PROATIA, which are also laws requiring
identity management but for this article I will be
looking at FICA & RICPCI in particular, because of
their impact on identity management and where this
might be leading. This article is not just about
responding to laws it is about the problems that
face the introduction of real identity solutions
into your organisation. |

Agenbag
Description:
Companies that are repeatedly failing security
audits, struggling to manage visibility,
accountability and tracability within their
organisation, and whose projects are being hampered
by complex security administration problems would
benefit significantly from an Identity Management
and Provisioning strategy. This, declares Warwick
Metcalfe, secure business solutions architect at
Inobits Consulting, has become absolutely critical
to rolling out successful and cost-effective
business-driven IT solutions that are secure and
ready for next-generation collaborative e-business. |

Description:
"Windows Server 2003 provides many technical
improvements, especially in the area of Active
Directory. Standard banks enterprise directory needs
to be capable of supporting all Standard Bank
business units, including those that require
complete autonomy - so the ability to create
multiple Active Directory forests and link them
together with trusts is especially attractive,"
continues Andrew Keartland, senior consultant at
Inobits Consulting. |

Inobits improves server management at Standard Bank
with Windows .NET Server 2003

Date: 04/05/2003
Posted By: Marius
Agenbag
Description:
“Standard Bank wanted to reduce the time and effort
required to administer its 400 servers running
Microsoft Windows NT, and supporting its
Windows-based desktop infrastructure,” explains
Inobits CEO Johan Grobler. “Limitations of the
Windows NT domain model, when combined with earlier
domain consolidation efforts by the bank, had
resulted in a single “flat” user domain with 11,500
users and no hierarchical organisation. This made it
difficult to continue centralising
infrastructure-related support and administrative
functions without compromising the level of autonomy
required by certain business units. |

The changing role of the directory

Date: 04/03/2003
Author: Dawie
Human

Agenbag
Description: From
flat non-scalable systems used primarily for user
authentication, the directory has evolved into a
critical piece of the IT infrastructure that plays
an integral role in the organisational network. As
the IT industry becomes more and more
services-based, however, so the need for integration
between the various disparate systems that make up
the network is becoming increasingly essential.
Consequently, the role of the directory is changing.

The role of Meta Directories

Date: 04/02/2003
Author: Dawie
Human
Posted By: Marius
Agenbag
Description: As
the operational core of almost all middleware
services, directories can contain critical
customisation information for people, processes,
resources and groups. By placing such information in
a common storage area, diverse applications from
diverse locations can access a consistent and
comprehensive source for current values of key data.
But, says Dawie Human, Technical Director at Inobits
Consulting, this is also the downfall of
directories, as running one common storage area is
difficult to achieve in the real world.
Additionally, too many people are involved and there
are too many political barriers to overcome. |

The role of a Directory

Description: “The
directory is becoming the glue between service
delivery and system integration,” says Dawie Human,
IT consultant at Inobits Consulting. “For example,
the rise of the Internet as a medium for conducting
business has led to the development of portal
services through which an organisations customers,
employees and partners can access relevant
information. Only identified users can log on to a
portal. The directory is the hierarchical structure
in which the user information is stored – their
name, password, email address and so on. |
